Sado/Portugal Nursery

Cost Reduction & Shoot Supply Boost with Sado Nursery

  • Stable 15-25 ppt salinity and 15-25°C temps optimize Z. marina growth, cutting cycles to 6-12 months vs. 9-18 months in Baltic/North Sea.

  • Nutrient-rich Sado inflows and 2-4 m tides provide natural fertilization and allows energy efficient water replacement and airation.

  • Optimal waterquality as declared Natura 2020 nature reserve

  • 2,800+ sunshine hours/year enhance photosynthesis 20-30% over North’s 1,500-2,000 hours, accelerating biomass and reducing propagation costs (INE).

  • Other variants of seagrass optional

  • Local labor cost advantage

  • Scalable 10 ha setup with existing infrastructure

  • Integrated concept with bivalent filters to improve water quality

  • Established fresh produce supply chains (from adjecent fish and oyster farms) allow export at optimal cost point

Custom design for seagrass & coral planting:

  • Operating depth : 0-10m in Oceanwater

  • Weight : aprox 25kg for easy airtravel and minimal
    support vessel requirements

  • Planting speed : aprox one growth hectar during a 5 days daylight workweek; reduces in tandem operations;
in comparism a hectar to be planted by divers requires 5 to 10 times the time.

  • Cost rate : based on supports vessel lease costs, commercial divers cost and speed
advantage ->project costs can easily be cut in half by hectar

  • Planting density : Typically 20.000 shoots per hectar with
    growth patches with higher density

  • Survival rate : 80-90% with shoots (local transplants)

  • Planting tools : Tray (26 shoots) or funnel to support vessel

  • Option for shoots

  • Thoroughly tested technology!
(4th generation) and approved by marine biologists from the USA, UK, and Indonesia.

  • Monitoring during planting and control of the planting/sowing process. This allows a fully digital certification process.

Product details:
bioactive bivalves filter products

Enhancing water quality naturally. Scientific research and experience shows that often restauration requires water cleaning to deliver lasting success. Bluetides can offer suitable bivalves filters to achieve this goal measurably and reliably

Bioactive Filters

Improve water quality sustainably.

Local Partnerships

Collaborating with local suppliers.

Natural Reefs

Supporting marine ecosystem restoration.

Price Indications

Every project is different and requires customisation and nature needs to be well understood. However Bluetides strives to reduce complexity and deliver outcome.

ROV planting (priced per growth hectar)
Supplementary Supplies (priced per growth hectar)
  • Most scaling projects requires shoot supply form a nursery. These cost make up typically 1/3 of the ha costs

  • In various projects the water quality makes a 6 months cleaning phase with bioactive bivalent filter a requirement. With ongoing contaimination the biofilter need to continue operate after planting.

Project Set up cost (Onetime)

Site&Plant selection; Water quality strategy; Regulatory and approvals

Up to 3 sm from the coast in the sea or in estuaries the Bluetides support vessel can be used within Iberia; for projects under offshore conditions a support vessel needs to be chartered. A typical planting session requires one boat and one ROV operator sometimes a technical support. The largest priceadvantage will be achieved with a 5-10 times faster planting speed vs human divers and a smaller core crew

Our Locations
